Tips from Bo Clawson

...the View from behind the Lathe...

Bo Clawson has been using CAD since PowerDraw 2 about 1988.
Basic Points below will get their own page over time. Check back!

Set up your windows, palettes and preferences the way you want them. Now make a copy of these files:

PowerCADD™ 2000 Commands (in your System::Preferences folder)
PowerCADD™ 2000 Defaults (also in your System::Preferences folder)

Now make another copy and put it in a very safe place.

I find that System 9 can get a corrupted System file ocassionally and so I keep track of its byte length and check it after crashes. If it changes length, I put it in the trash, replace with a 'virgin' copy, double click the System Folder to get the 'blessed' icon on it, and reboot.

The Mac OS, Finder, General & System Preference files (in the Preferences folder) along with the PowerCADD pref. files are all subject to corruption from unknown problems from time to time.

I have just taken the attitude, from experience, that I will just trash those preferences after a crash as a preventative step without knowing if it is really helping or not, but sometimes it does the trick.

My ultimate fallback position is to maintain basic bare bones, nearly virgin OS on different partition/s so they can be booted on in an emergency. That way you can boot on something that is 'good' and barring hardware conflicts, get back to work quickly.

Multi screen

Once you are back on a "large screen" you can set the resolution down in steps and open & setup your PowerCADD palettes where you want them and then close PowerCADD & make copies of those defaults files to save in named folders so you can have a default file to match various screen resolutions you might use.

 For each user screen configuration, the user creates a storage folder in the "PCADD Prefs Storage" folder below. Each time he sets his PowerCADD preferences for a particular screen setup, he shuts down PowerCADD, & copies the PowerCADD X Defaults files to his appropriate folder, to reuse later as needed.
[X = version of PowerCADD]

Normally the PowerCADD X Defaults file is the one that changes. The Command keys would rarely change between various screen setups & thus I only keep one spare copy of it by itself, below, in the storage folder. I only copy in a new PowerCADD X Commands file to the storage area when I change command keys.

The PowerCADD x Defaults & Commands below are the currently active files created & updated by PCADD application & saved by PowerCADD on Quit.

When I add my 2nd screen for the PowerBook:

1. I shut down PowerCADD

2. Navigate to the PCADD Prefs Storage:Dual Screen Setups:1024 1st & 1024 2nd [folder]

3. Copy the PowerCADD x Defaults file into the "Preferences" folder to overwrite the existing file

4. When I launch PowerCADD with the 2nd screen on the PowerBook, PowerCADD's palettes position themselves on the 2nd screen where I want them.
