Library Instructions

If you have something you would like to make available in the Library, great! We want it! The following suggestions should make the experience more enjoyable for all of us.

Before you click the send button, stop and think.

Check your file over and make sure there are no off-page objects, duplicate objects, empty text objects, miscellaneous splinter objects, etc. Check your layers and layer set-ups. Is everything copacetic? Smaller files make faster downloads; give us what we need and no more. If it is a symbol library, make sure the insertion points are where they belong, where an experienced but ignorant user would expect them to be. We are librarians, not editors.

Consider including some kind of description of the file, what it is intended for, why you created it. This is as valuable and interesting as the data. If there are any relevant instructions on how to use it, write them down.

Fonts. Remember that we don't all have Glasgow or Corbu; If necessary, change the fonts you have used to something relatively standard. We all hate getting poked in the eye with a font substitution dialog, it's bad feng shui. or karma. or something.

Show off. If you can do something cool, lay a sample on us. Practical stuff, exotic stuff, whatever floats your boat. You never know what will put juice in somebody else's rocket. You will never lose a commission, or forfeit a job because somebody downloaded something you posted in here.

Don't submit stuff you shouldn't. Sooner or later somebody will find out. If it isn't yours to give, get permission. If you can't get permission, don't send it in. Do onto others as you would have others do unto you. The Library will work if we respect the rules.

Remember -- your name will be on it. It's probably worth taking a few extra minutes to check everything over before you send it away. You know better than anyone how it works, why it is set up the way it is, etc. A little care will have a lot of effect. Consistent grouping, use of fills, lineweights -- will all be helpful and appreciated. The better the quality of the documents in here, the more we'll all be encouraged to contribute.

'nuff said.

Okay, send it in.
