Our Day Has Come

Printing in OS X

USB Epson 3000

I have just gone through an interesting experience that may benefit some of you who have Epson 3000 printers. I have been using my printer as a raster printer. I never installed the PostScript drivers at Epson's suggestion. It has worked fine for years this way. The only problem I had was printing PDF files. They printed fine but took forever to compile before printing. From the print command to actual paper moving through the printer, could some times take many minutes. An example would be a PowerCADD drawing with lots of layers, objects, etc and A2 size (23.4X16.5) could take four or five minutes to ready it to print. With a 15 or 20 page 8.5 x 11 PDF with lots of graphics it could take enough time that I would just walk away and get a cup of coffee or whatever.

Since I upgraded to OS X and installed Gimp-Print, I have been unable to print PDF files. When trying to print Acrobat would do everything including launching the Print Center but the Print Center would say "No job ready" or some such. I called Adobe, and they said that since the drivers were Gimp-Print and not Epson they couldn't assure me that they were the problem. No help there!

Finally, I posted my problem on the SourceForge.net forum for Gimp-Print Development. I was asked if I had installed "GhostPrint". I had never heard of it. But guess what... It is on the same page as the Gimp-Print download and it is a PostScript driver that works with Gimp-Print. I downloaded it and...

Oh, Baby, what a difference!!! Now Adobe Acrobat Documents fly from the print command to the Printer. It is 5 - 10 seconds from the Print command tops before paper is moving through the printer with ink flying onto it. If you have an Epson 3000, by all means download Gimp-Print and ESP Ghostscript 7.05.6 today.

My Epson 3000 is directly connected to my G4 via USB. All that is necessary to get my setup working with Gimp-Print and ESP GhostScript is to download it from the site and follow the install instruction supplied with the "Read Me."

The only thing you have to do (while the printer is on) is find the printer in the Print Center by option clicking on Add Printer selecting "Advanced" and selecting from the massive list provided with Gimp-Print and click on it and you are done! ESP GhostScript just has to be installed. There are no other steps.

That's about everything I know about it. And all of this is in the Read Me.
