Printing in OS X

Speed Issues

In setting up your network, it's a good idea to consider a number of speed issues. In the past 10BaseT Ethernet was the standard, but now there is 100BaseT (Fast Ethernet) which is ten times faster. For maximum speed, you want

Fast Ethernet on your Mac (all current Macs offer Fast Ethernet)
Fast Ethernet Router and Switch
Fast Ethernet Print Server or Network card in your plotter

Here are some examples:

Routers

Linksys BEFSR81 -- Fast Ethernet and 8-Port Switch

When you purchase a router for your office, be sure to get on that is a switch and not a hub. A hub broadcasts your data to all machines on the network, while a switch only sends it to the intended node on the network, thus it's faster. As an example, the Linksys EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 8-Port Switch is a typical router used in many offices. It offers Fast Ethernet and 8-Port Switch, so this would make for a fast connection with the plotter.

Print Servers

All of the print servers shown below offer Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, and they are the currently offered models.

JetDirect 300X

The Hewlett-Packard JetDirect 300X is a one-port print server.

JetDirect 500X

The Hewlett-Packard JetDirect 300X is a three-port print server.

Linksys EFSP42

Linksys offers print servers with one, two and three ports. The example shown above has two ports.
